Flight Attendant Drug and Alcohol Program E-Line

The Association between Alcohol Consumption and Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month which hopefully brings increase attention and

support for the awareness, early detection and treatment of this disease.

Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide. Currently there is

not sufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer but we are aware of some risk

factors. Did you know that extensive epidemiologic data has linked alcohol consumption to

risk of breast cancers?

The overall estimated association is an approximate 30-50% increase in breast cancer risk

from 15-30 grams/day of alcohol consumption (about 1-2 drinks/day). Modifying this

behavior could have a large impact on breast cancer incidence.
